Dog Photography with a Twist…

Dog Photography with a Twist: Why I Get in the Water Too

When most people picture a pet photography session, they imagine a park, a sunny field, or maybe a studio setup. What they don’t always expect? Me waist-deep in the ocean with a camera in hand, snapping away while your dog charges through the waves.

Yep—at Snappy Pet Photography, I’m not afraid to get wet.

So... why get in the water?

Simple: to capture something different.

Photographing from the water lets me shoot from a dog’s perspective—right in the heart of the action. It gives me angles and moments you just can’t get from the shore. Whether it’s the splash of paws, a joyful shake, or a full-on zoomie in the shallows, it’s the kind of energy that makes photos pop.

What kind of dogs love it?

You’d be surprised! It’s not just the confident swimmers. Lots of dogs enjoy wading, paddling, or simply chasing a stick through the surf. As long as your dog is comfortable around water (and you don’t mind a bit of sand and salt), we can create some absolute magic.

And if they’re more of a dip-the-toes-in type? That’s totally fine too. Some of the best portraits come from quiet moments in the shallows, framed by ripples and golden light.

Is it safe?

Absolutely. Safety always comes first. I scout locations ahead of time to make sure the conditions are calm, clean, and dog-friendly. I also check tides and weather, and I’ll always chat with you beforehand about your dog’s confidence level in and around water.

And don’t worry—your dog doesn’t need to be off-lead if that’s not something you’re comfortable with. Most of the time, leads can be edited out later if needed.

Let’s talk gear (briefly!)

Shooting in water requires a bit of extra planning. My gear is housed in waterproof casing, and I’ve practiced enough to move quickly and keep everything safe. That way, I can focus on capturing real moments—without fussing with equipment mid-session.

The result? Natural, vibrant, joy-filled images.

In-water sessions have a rawness to them. They’re playful, unpredictable, and completely unique to your dog’s personality. And for me, that’s what makes them so special.

So if your pup loves the beach, the river, or even just a splash in the shallows—let’s wade in and make some memories.
